As an early Christmas Gift, we're sharing a Free black hole plugin for Adobe After Effects.
It's 3D, highly customizable, and includes beautiful volumetric fog.
And while the iconic Black Hole from Interstellar took 100 hours to render per frame, ours will take less than a second.
This plugin simulates the path of light as it is warped by the curvature of space. As the path of light is distorted, it allows us to see the acretion disk "behind" the black hole from the top and bottom.
Creating a black hole in After Effects without this plugin is simply impossible.
To achieve the best cinematic look, we integrated volumetric 3D noise directly to the plugin. This is something most visualizations of black holes miss out on, despite being so important for realism.
You can adjust the scale, octaves, roughness, lacunarity and more to achieve any specific look. It's a fun plugin to experiment with, even if the results aren't scientifically accurate.
Higher values shrink the clouds to a uniform, squished pattern, while lower values create a sparse, patchy disk around the black hole.
The artistic control in this plugin is what is most exciting. Crates Black Hole exposes all the parameters necessary to let you adjust the black hole's mass, speed, thickness, density, color and more.
Get creative, adjust parameters, and discover new never-seen-before looks for black holes. It's incredibly fun to play with.
For example, setting a negative mass will simulate a "white hole", the distortion is quite interesting!
To help get started, a bunch of black-hole presets have been included in the plugin.
Each of these have been fine-tuned to give you the classic iconic looks, as well as some experimental designs - or "happy accidents".
An experimental feature we wanted to add was "volumetric shadows".
The two options you have to add shadows are:
Setting this to a low value blocks light from passing through gas, creating a natural "shadow" effect.
Enabling this will calculate distant shadows (where one cloud blocks another). This is slower to run, so only enable it when needed.
